Shooting in the Summer
If there is a season that is perfect for shooting, it is the summer. With clear skies and warm days, the conditions are ideal for spending the day shooting to your heart’s content.
You want to be sure to protect yourself from the summer sun. Dehydration and sunburn are a real concern during the summer months. Here are a few tips for ensuring your shooting trip is not cut short by the summer sun.
How to Protect Yourself from the Summer Sun While Shooting
The chances of becoming dehydrated increase during the summer. Many become so dehydrated that they need hospitalization or become fatalities. It is easy to avoid either by simply upping your intake of fluids. The best choice is water or sports drinks. You will want to avoid drinks that contain caffeine. Simply fill a cooler with bottled water or sports drinks and ice to have on hand.
Your skin is your next concern. Sunburn is extremely uncomfortable when it occurs. Be sure to pack sunscreen and apply it liberally to the skin about at least a half hour before you head out. Take it with you to reapply over the course of the day.
Another way to protect your skin is by covering it up. Since the weather is warmer, you want to stick to light long sleeved shirts and pants. Choose cotton clothing as it tends to breathe better than synthetic fabrics. A baseball cap is also great for keeping your face covered and the sun out of your eyes.
Speaking of eyes, it is important to keep them covered when out in the sun. The sun can also damage your vision when exposed for long periods of time. Wear a pair of sunglasses that guard against UVA and UVB rays.
