Gun Laws Basics in Texas

In the state of Texas, we take our second amendment rights seriously and ensure every citizen may purchase and carry a firearm if they so wish to do so. For handguns, shotguns, and rifles there are no waiting periods or registration forms to fill out. You simply need to be over 18 with a state-issued ID. (Handguns require that you be over 21.) Be aware that most licensed dealers will not sell to out-of-state residents due to the differences in laws and regulations across state lines.

With proper licensing, you can carry your pistol or revolver on your person or in your vehicle as long as it remains out of sight. Rifles and shotguns do not have to be concealed, but they must be carried in manner that does not cause alarm. Machine guns, suppressors, and short barreled firearms are legal in Texas, but the state does abide by the Federal ban on all assault weapons.
